Panowie, którzy żyjecie po mojej śmierci!
Skoro czytacie mój list, to znaczy, że już was opuściłem i poznałem tajemnicę śmierci, która zamknięta dla was jest na siedem spustów. Ja jestem wolny, a wy musicie jeszcze żyć i dręczyć się koszmarami. Mógłbym się jednak założyć, że tam gdzie teraz jestem, i skąd, jak powiedział książę duński, żaden wędrowiec jeszcze nie powrócił, nie ma absolutnie nic. Kto się ze mną nie zgadza, zapraszam, niech sprawdzi osobiście. Nie dbam zresztą o was ani trochę, a list piszę po to, by wam nie przyszło do głowy, że podniosłem na siebie rękę z powodu jakiejś rzewnej historii. Nudzi mnie wasz świat i, doprawdy, przyczynę tę uważam za zupełnie wystarczającą. O tym zaś, że nie oststniebydlę ze mnie, świadczy skórzana teczka.
